How do Moles Form?

M

Our skin contains three main types of cells:
Keratinocytes – Our skin cells
Langerhans – Our immune cells
Melanocytes – Responsible for producing the pigment that gives our skin its color

Melanocytes’ typical growth pattern is spread throughout the skin. However, when these cells grow in a cluster, they form moles.

How to Prevent Moles?

Although moles can appear seemingly at random throughout the body, some factors can trigger their growth. The most prominent cause of moles is sun exposure because solar rays can damage our skin cell production. Avoiding peak sun times, using sunscreen all year, and avoiding tanning lamps will minimize the chances of developing new moles.

Why an oral surgeon vs. dentist?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive specialized training to treat a variety of conditions affecting the head, neck, face, mouth, and jaws. Although a general dentist may perform simple tooth extractions -- more complex surgeries, such as removing wisdom teeth, are what we are specifically trained to do. Plus, we have advanced equipment to make procedures more affordable, and significantly more comfortable, for you to have the best overall experience.
