Before we fit you with a beautiful new set of dental implants, sometimes we have to do some prep work to get your jaw strong and healthy for the procedure. In the case of weak or deteriorating jaw bones, a dental bone graft and sinus lift may be in order.
A bone graft is used to strengthen the jaw bone before anchoring in implants. The bone graft will be placed next to the thin bone and allowed to heal for up to six months. After the graft has fused to your pre-existing bone and the healing process is completed, the implant can be placed.
Bone grafting is usually a relatively comfortable office procedure with any different bone-grafting materials available, including your own bone.
Another common grafting procedure is the sinus lift technique. Sinuses are air cavities within the skull, and the maxillary sinuses are the largest pockets located in the cheek area above the upper jaw. These hollow spaces are separated from tooth roots by a thin layer of bone and membrane.
This wall of bone can deteriorate over time due to disease or aging. With the sinus lift technique, we’re able to gently restore bone beneath the sinuses to allow for secure implant placement. This procedure is very simple and commonly performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation.
