What is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a common procedure to restore natural bone structure that has deteriorated. This bone graft builds a solid foundation for the implants, which support your new smile.

nsufficient bone is a common oral problem. Most patients are completely unaware of the issue or its cause. Strong, dense bone is very important for your oral health, especially pertaining to the teeth. However, bone in the jaws can easily be lost for reasons such as tooth loss, chronic disease, or injury.

To securely replace missing teeth with dental implants or an All-on-4® procedure, bone grafting or sinus lifts may be a part of your treatment plan.

What is a Sinus Lift?

Another common grafting procedure is the sinus lift technique. Sinuses are air cavities within the skull. Maxillary sinuses are the largest – located in the cheek area above the upper jaw. These hollow spaces are separated from tooth roots only by a thin layer of bone and membrane.

In the past, if the wall of bone has deteriorated, dental implants were not an option. This occurs quite commonly in the back part of the upper jaw around the molars due to dental disease and simple aging as the sinuses expand throughout life. However, the sinus lift technique is a method of gently restoring bone beneath the sinus to allow for implant placement and long-term success. This procedure is very simple and commonly performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation.

What Can Cause Bone Deterioration?

  • Tooth Loss. Most occurs within the first 18 months following the removal of the tooth, but gradual shrinkage continues throughout life.
  • Periodontal (gum) disease. This chronic disease destroys structures that support teeth that cannot be restored.
  • Facial Trauma. An injury in the face may knock a tooth out or break it off below the gums. A significant impact on a tooth or the mouth can also break the underlying bone, leading to areas of large bone loss that will require reconstruction.
  • Other health issues. Multiple general health conditions can promote bone deterioration or reduced density.

Why an oral surgeon vs. dentist?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive specialized training to treat a variety of conditions affecting the head, neck, face, mouth, and jaws. Although a general dentist may perform simple tooth extractions -- more complex surgeries, such as removing wisdom teeth, are what we are specifically trained to do. Plus, we have advanced equipment to make procedures more affordable, and significantly more comfortable, for you to have the best overall experience.
